Fans of boxing are living through a very lucky time right now. We’re in another golden age for the sport that’s just too good not to tune in to the latest fight. A golden age in boxing is something that happens when enough exceptional fighters are all active and competing at the same time. A good example of one of these era’s would be the 1970’s with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman at heavyweight and Sugar Ray Leonard rising through the ranks at welterweight. Times like these are so exciting because there’s few sporting events that can generate as much excitement as boxing when the right fighters are matched against each other. These are often called super fights and are usually pay per view but believe me, it’s value for money every time. Currently we’re in a golden age of boxing as some active fighters we have now will undoubtedly go down in boxing’s Hall of Fame.
Men and women such as Tyson Fury, Canelo Alvarez and Katie Taylor incite such excitement and support in their respective fights due to their brilliance in the ring and out of it. The heavyweight division is on fire right now and the excitement is palpable. Between truly exceptional fighters like Fury, AJ, Usyk, Wilder, Whyte and Ruiz, all these names could be put into a hat and two drawn out to match up for a fight and there would be fireworks. Currently the pound for pound number one fighter in the world is Mexico’s Saul Canelo Alvarez who unified all championships in the super-middleweight division to become the first Mexican undisputed champion and the first undisputed champion at super-middleweight in general. He fights anyone he can and is even fighting for a cruiserweight title in his next fight, fuelling the rumours of his eventual rise to heavyweight which would be very interesting to see. In terms of women’s boxing, the face is Ireland’s Katie Taylor. A humble, down to earth woman who can fight like hell and currently holds all championship belts at lightweight. Her ability to rally country-wide support is incredible and she fights tough competition to a victory ever time. If you’re looking for a new sport to get interested in, look no further than boxing and enjoy this era while it lasts because we never know when the next golden age in boxing will be
