As we re-emerge into the world after lockdown, we wonder what this ‘new normal’ will come to mean for us all. There are big questions to consider; but often our most pressing question is: when will the hairdressers re-open to sort out my roots! This week, as well as pleading for hairdressers to make us pretty again, we will also pay homage to the blessed home hair dye and the root touch-up kits that have helped to keep our grey at bay, during weeks of lockdown.
Who was the genius who invented the first at-home hair colouring kit you ask? Schwarzkopf, a German cosmetics company are credited with developing the first ever home colour product in 1947. However, for the first synthetic hair dye, we have to go back to Mr. ‘Because You’re Worth it’ himself, the founder of L’Oréal. In 1907, Schueller, then a French young chemist, discovered a blend of harmless chemical compounds that would safely colour people’s hair. Once patented, mass-production of the hair dye began in 1909 in Paris; and it quickly spread across Europe and to every corner of the world. So thank you Eugene Schueller, 103 years later, and your original 1909 slogan still rings true: “L'Oréal makes the hair colour and vigour"!
