Roy Jones Jr was a professional boxer who fought at four weight classes and won championships in all of them. These classes were middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. For a fighter to win a heavyweight title after fighting in middleweight is beyond impressive on it’s own but what made Roy such a legendary fighter was his style of fighting. He was powerful, fast, bold and a defensive genius. When facing an opponent his hands were often down and he would stick his head out like a bullseye waiting to be hit but punches barely ever seemed to catch him. He would wait for his opponent to miss and then punish them for their mistakes with counter punches which often led to impressive knockouts.
My impression of Roy Jones Jr is that he is one of the greatest fighters to ever live. His fighting style to me is one of the most entertaining things I’ve ever seen on a screen. He was so skilled and confident that it was comparable to watching someone enter the matrix. While he didn’t retire undefeated, his career is still so impressive that his losses are basically blips in his legacy as opposed to embarrassing events. Roy kept fighting now matter how old he got and this has led to him being beaten by younger men that he would’ve beaten in his prime which is unfortunate but last year in 2020, he and Mike Tyson fought while in their fifties. The event was astounding with both men making very good accounts of themselves and fighting to the last. Mike got to showcase that he’s still the terrifying figure he was when he was active and Roy showed off his fast hands, quick reflexes and remarkably high ring IQ. I’m thankful to have lived in an era where I can enjoy the fighting of Roy Jones Jr and for anyone who enjoys boxing, I hope you enjoyed this blog
